Entrepreneurship: frontier of the known world

Of the gladdest moments in human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of Habit, the leaden weight of Routine, the cloak of many Cares and the slavery of Civilization, man feels once more happy.

Sir Richard Francis Burton

Many words have been written on the fascinating phenomenon of entrepreneurship, and I am sure that many more shall follow. It could not have been any other way, for when the time of great explorations and expeditions has passed, a new breed of brave travellers was born – the entrepreneurs.

These people carry both a great gift and a terrible burden of a dire need for change. They are always on the lookout for something that can reverse the polarity of the world, that would shift and uncover what has been hidden beneath the pile of bias and prejudice of the human civilization.

While most people dare to be right, entrepreneurs dare to be wrong. Testing, trying, attempting – entrepreneur is not afraid of those words, he embraces them, engulfs their power to move forward and gorgeously smash the walls separating what is known from the unknown only to be either lifted by their discovery or thrown into the abyss of failure (which happens more often than not – 9 out of 10 businessess usually cease to exist shortly after being established). But, even then, these madmen do not fall into despair and self-pity. They take over the momentum, miraculously changing what seemed to be a shameful defeat into a great victory – and bringing the desirable change with it.

When the dust settles, they are nowhere to be found – it is not in their habit to live in a world where everything is clearly defined and stable. The uncharted waters is their paradise, the adrenaline is their blood , and the unchallenged dogma is their sworn enemy. Entrepreneurs have but a few allies, and they do not need more, for their strength is not in numbers: their ability to peer through the veil of uncertainty and to spot opportunities is the sharpest edge one can desire; their lack of fear of what lies ahead is the most durable shield; their desire to step into the unmarked lands and lead the way is the loudest warcry.

To those brave souls that have chosen the path of entrepreneurship, that have stepped up against the inevitability and dream of the unachievable things – I salute you.
